“I have spent over 30 years operating in the world’s most extreme, remote and hostile environments, from War and Volcanoes, to the summit of Mount Everest, to the Ocean depths. I am now beyond clear on one thing, spending time outside, with friends, in nature is the biggest leverage move that one can make to bolster resilience and hone our psychological body armour.”

5 Questions with Aldo

How did you first get into adventures/exploration?

It all started for me with the Scout movement. I was in the Beavers from a young age and basically left Scouts, well prepared to join the World’s most elite Amphibious force, the Royal Marines.

What’s one piece of advice you’d give to someone starting out?

Just get started. It sounds silly but the biggest problem we all have is waiting until everything is perfect, perfect weather, perfect timing, perfect kit. Just get a group of like minded mates together and come up with a plan. It can be simple, spend one night a month outside camping, walk 15 miles over 2 days etc. But the important thing is making time for it and have a bias to action.

What’s been the most challenging moment in your journey so far?

There have been many challenging things in my life I have had to endure, but that is the same for everyone. That’s why I enjoy testing myself in the elements as it directly builds my capacity for being able to deal with problems when the arise. I recently completed the worlds hardest Arctic Ultra race in Sweden and found it to have been one of the hardest things I have ever done. But by breaking it down into small chunks, not looking to far ahead and just continually moving, I managed to cover 500km over snow and ice, whilst being injured in 10 days.

What’s been the most rewarding?

Doing anything that is hard physically, is very good for our mental health, and our emotional health. When we have gone through the wringer and had to dig deep, the sense of achievement is epic. Reaching the Summit of Mount Everest and Lhotse in 24 hours was exactly that for me. Hard work pays off.

What’s one thing people might not expect about life as a pro/adventurer?

It can be hard to juggle the ups and downs. One minute you have achieved something, the next there’s a lull. You must be constantly pushing and sacrificing, and for those that want to get instant gratification, this isn’t the life for them. Spending time away from loved ones can take it’s toll and that becomes harder as the kids get older.
