The right backpacking backpack size depends on how long you're out and how much gear you carry. For 2–4 night routes with disciplined packing, 36–50L is enough. A week or more typically needs 50–65L. For expedition carries or group gear, 65L+ gives you the volume without overloading the suspension. Our range covers 36L to over 80L. You can use the litre filter above to narrow by capacity.
Several of our backpacking packs work well for travel as well as trail use. The Farpoint Trek 55 and Fairview Trek 55 are designed for exactly this, with panel-loading compartments, lockable zips and a harness that stows flat, making them airport and hostel-friendly without sacrificing suspension performance. For packs from the core backpacking range, the adjustable harness, integrated rain cover and Daylite Compatible Fit make them practical for adventure travel itineraries that mix routes and cities. Whether a backpacking backpack can be used as carry-on luggage depends on its capacity, dimensions and the airline's baggage rules. While some smaller backpacking packs in the 36–40L range may be suitable as carry-on backpacks(Opens in a new window), larger 50L+ trekking packs will usually need to be checked in. Always check the packed dimensions of your backpack against your airline's current cabin baggage allowance before travelling.
